Scope of Work

Commissioned by Woollahra Council to refurbish the dilapidated Don Riotchie Memorial wall lettering, we produced 316-grade stainless steel lettering to replace the original printed text.

We needed a solution that could handle the harsh environment of The Gap Park at Watsons Bay. Stainless Steel was chosen for its longevity qualities and easy maintenance process for future cleaning. The concrete wall top side surface with the original printed lettering was deteriorated and required cement grinding to remove the old lettering and bring the surface back to flat and clean.

Using #316 2mm brushed stainless steel, we cut out the lettering and applied insertion studs at the back to anchor the new lettering to the cement surface.

Production

The refurbishment of the Don Ritchie Memorial required careful planning and precision workmanship to preserve the integrity of the original design while providing a long-lasting, contemporary finish. The existing printed lettering was first removed by grinding back the concrete wall surface, creating a clean, smooth substrate ready for installing the new memorial lettering. This preparation ensured the new elements would sit accurately and securely while presenting a refreshed appearance.

Each replacement letter was laser cut from high-quality stainless steel to precisely replicate the original typography and layout. Mounting pins were professionally attached to the rear of every letter before the installation locations were carefully marked and drilled into the prepared concrete surface. The stainless steel letters were then permanently secured using concealed pin fixings, resulting in a clean, durable installation that faithfully restored the Don Ritchie Memorial while ensuring it will withstand the elements for many years to come.

Don Ritchie OAM, affectionately known as the "Angel of The Gap," became one of Australia's most remarkable quiet heroes. Living opposite Sydney's iconic cliffs at The Gap for more than 45 years, Don dedicated himself to helping people in crisis. He would approach those in distress with the simple question, "Can I help you in some way?" and often invite them home for a cup of tea and a conversation. His extraordinary compassion is officially credited with saving more than 180 lives.

Awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2006 for his contribution to suicide prevention, Don was also named Australia's Local Hero in the 2011 Australian of the Year Awards. His legacy is a powerful reminder that kindness, empathy and a willingness to reach out can change, and even save, a life. The Don Ritchie Memorial at The Gap stands as a lasting tribute to his extraordinary compassion.
